Girl Scouts

Membership Update
We currently have 18,505 girl members- we met our goal of 18,000!
Troop Leaders: Remember to check eBiz troop management often this time of year to make sure your troop members have re-registered for the 2012 year. Even if they re-register online at home, you will see them here!
New Troop Leader Tip: Do Teambuilding Activities with your Troop!
You and the girls and adult volunteers in your troop are a team! As a team this year, you will set goals, make plans to meet those goals, do activities and projects together, and have a lot of fun! In order to work together as a great team, try some teambuilding exercises with your girls.
All Aboard
For this challenge you will need an item that is foldable and preferably not too slippery. (An old flannel-backed tablecloth works well.) In front of the group, the leader spreads the cloth and explains that when "All Aboard" is called, everyone is to get both feet onto the platform. “All Aboard” is called, everyone is praised and asked to move back off the platform. Fold the cloth in half (or just fold 1/3 under), lay it down, and call “All Aboard” again. This is where they begin to get the picture and begin to cooperate. Continue to make the platform smaller and smaller until safety forces you to stop.
Balloon Train
Have the girls stand in a line like you would for the bunny hop. Each girl has a balloon and the balloon is placed between your chest and the person in front of yours back. The object is to have the train move around the room without the balloons falling and without use of arms and hands. If a balloon falls they must get the ball back up trying not to let any more fall. This will take teamwork!
Human Knot
Girls get in a circle & put their hands all together in the center. Girls grab hands without looking at whose hands they are grabbing.... they are "knotted up" and have to untangle without letting their hands go. They can twist their hands but never let go.
Turn the Circle Inside Out
A circle is formed using all the players. Everyone joins hands and faces the middle of the circle. Everyone closes their eyes and tries to turn the circle inside out so that everyone is facing the opposite direction (outside of the circle) without letting go of each others' hands. (Hint: the solution is that two players hold up their hands and everyone else follows through underneath.
Beaded Conversations
Give each girl a package of beads (different color for each person). Give everyone a 6-inch piece of string with a heart bead in middle. Divide group into two rows and have them sit facing each other with feet touching. Then have each person carry on a conversation with the person facing you. Tell about yourself. Where you are from, birth date, favorite color etc. Then exchange bead with that person thread it onto you have traded all your color beads (or have one left), and move down line to your right to next person and do the same thing until you have exchanged all your beads. Tie and wear your new bracelet!
Hints for Becoming a Great Team:
- Encourage girls to support and assist one another.
- Talk about teamwork. Ask the girls to define teamwork. Help them use words and phrases like cooperation, working together, planning and listening.
- Plan and carry out a community service project together.
- Use the Fall Product Program and the Cookie Sale Program to improve your teamwork. Together, set a goal. Encourage the girls to encourage each other to reach the goal.
Service Area Leader Meetings
Most Service Areas meet monthly during the school year and all leaders (01 and 02) are encouraged to attend. If no troop leaders can attend, a member of the troop committee should attend.
During meetings, leaders:
- Network with each other
- Give input and help make decisions about service area program opportunities for troops
- Receive information from the council, community and Service Area
- Receive brief, informal training
- Receive items from the Council Shop
There will be Service Area, Council, and community information at the Service Area Leader Meetings. At every Service Area Leader Meeting, there are also copies of forms that leaders use the most (these forms are also in the back of The Source and on the website at www.gsnwgl.org- to be copied as needed). Visit http://www.gsnwgl.org/calendar.html for dates, times, and locations of your next meeting.
2011-2012 Service Area Allocations
Again this year Service Areas will earn an allocation for their Service Area business. Service Areas can earn at least $1.02 per girl and they will have the opportunity to earn up to $1.65 per girl if they meet their goals! This year the Service Area allocations will be distributed in three parts- in October, December and March. In October, Service Areas will receive a larger allocation if they were successful in meeting last year's Family Partnership goal.
In December, the size of the Service Area allocation will be based on girl membership on October 31st. In March, the size of the allocation will be based on initial cookie sales. Help your Service Area reach their Family Partnership, girl membership and cookie program goals and you will help the Service Area receive more money for the girls!

The Fall Product Program has begun!
Starting today, October 7th through October 23rd girls have the opportunity to participate in the 2011 Fall Product Program (Cranberry Valley and Rockwood Service Areas sell November 1-14)! This year’s theme is “Investing in Today = Success for Tomorrow.” The mascot this year is Arlie the Arctic Fox. This program is a fun way to earn startup funds for your troop and cool recognitions for the girls.
If you need more information, please call Christin at 888.747.6945 ext. 5511.
Here is some information about this year’s program:
It’s Fun and Easy!
Fall Product Program has three components that families can have fun doing together, while girls learn great life-long skills.
Girls offer their friends and family the chance to order or renew favorite magazines through paper order forms or online with a credit card. When you get started, the first thing you should do is send 12 or more emails to family and friends to order their magazines online. Troop profit ($2.50 per subscription) will only be earned on those magazines sold online from October 7 – 23. Magazines purchased online after October 23rd will no longer earn troop profit.
Sell nuts and chocolates! Order your favorite nut and chocolate items ranging from Peanut Butter Dreams to Fruit Slices, Whole Cashews to Chocolate Covered Raisins; plus look for three new items – Blueberry Pomegranate Nut Crunch, Pistachios and Caramel Treasures. Back by popular demand, two decorative tins are featured in this year’s product offerings: a 100th Anniversary Luggage Tin and a school house tin. Troop profit is $0.85 per item.
Complete an address booklet and earn the “Together to the Top” patch and giant cupcake paperclip bookmark. Easy way for out-of-town family and friends to participate and order their favorite magazines. Just complete the address booklet with family and friends’ names and addresses. QSP sends the original mailing and one reminder mailing. No one becomes part of mailing list. Troop profit is $3 per booklet.
Sales Tips
- Set goals! Whether you base your goals on the fun activities your troop wants to do this year, the recognitions you'd like to earn or new skills you'd like to learn, research shows that those who set goals are much more likely to be successful!
- Know your products! You'll be better prepared to answer customers' questions, able to figure out what they're looking for, and more likely to make the sale!
- Contact extended family and friends! Talk to your grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, friends – almost everyone buys magazines, CDs and snacks. The more people you contact, the more sales you'll make!
- Utilize the email portion of the Magazine Sale! Let the emails be your selling force while you take in person orders!
- Say "Thank you"! Always say “thank you,” even if the person doesn't make a purchase. They will likely remember your politeness, and be that much more likely to make a purchase next time they're asked!
Safety Tips
All registered Girl Scouts may participate in Council-sponsored Product Programs with a completed parent/guardian permission slip.
Safety is of the utmost importance for girls and adults. The following guidelines should be followed for personal protection:
- The Fall Product Program is a "friends and family" activity. Girls should not go door-to-door.
- All products (chocolates, nuts and magazines) must be paid for in full at the time of order. Do not carry large amounts of money. Money must be given to the accompanying or supervising adult frequently to avoid girls walking around with large sums of cash.
- All checks for items sold made payable to “Girl Scouts.” Checks should NEVER be made payable to the parent, Girl Scout or Troop Leader.
Participating in Council-sponsored Product Programs is a fun skill-building activity for girls, please help to keep them safe at all times!
For more information, please review the 2011 Fall Product Program Family Informational Packet, email productprograms@gsnwgl.org or call 888.747.6945, ext. 5511.

Other Fun Birthday and Anniversary Events
This is a very special year to be a Girl Scout! On March 12, 2012 Girl Scouting will turn 100! Throughout the year, we will be sharing opportunities to get involved in Council-wide 100th Anniversary celebrations and tips and ideas for activities you can do in your troops and Service Areas to celebrate the 100th Anniversary.
Here is a story about Red Cedar Service Area’s 100th Anniversary event:
The Red Cedar Service Area recently held a 100th Birthday Party. To conclude the party, they had a friendship circle and a balloon release. Just a few days later, this note came in the mail!:
Hello,
Just a few lines to let you know that we found the balloon on September 25 about 7:30 am. The balloon was not busted. We picked it up and it wanted to go up again. It was right beside our line fence. It had rained during the night, so we thought that is probably what made it come down. The card was wet, so we dried it. We can hardly believe how far the balloon went so quick! We were wondering what time you let the balloon go. How many balloons went up including yours? And may I ask you one more question? How old are you? Please write back! We live in Seymour, Missouri.
Here are some other birthday and 100th Anniversary events to pencil in your calendar:
- 10/15 – 10/16- Cranberry Valley Girl Scouts Annual Birthday Bash (Nekoosa, WI):
Learn things from the 1850’s and 1860’s like candle making, quilting, tomahawk throwing, starting a fire by hand, and more! Girl Scouts will have birthday cake in honor of our founder “Daisy” Juliette Gordon Low. Dress up in costume from the era if you can and have even more fun! There will be a concession stand with burgers, hot dogs, sodas, and chips to purchase, as well as a “gift shop.”
Cost: $6.00 per person

Day of Caring
The largest one-day service event in Western Wisconsin saving United Way partner agencies and other nonprofits in our community more than $32,000 in labor costs. United Way of the Greater Chippewa Valley has held a Day of Caring event annually since 1995 to raise awareness of local needs and services, and help community members better understand the impact of their donated dollars.
So it’s with these ideals in mind that we sponsored a Day of Caring Volunteer Opportunity at the Eau Claire Service Center. The five men and women who make up the WQOW TV-18 Daybreak team helped paint the Program Room after their morning show Friday September 16.
We are excited to have these community volunteers assist us in a much needed makeover for that space, and always look forward to opportunities to share the importance of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience! Who knows? Maybe it could lead to a Series Pathway, or more!

Did You Know?
The new Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting books include new faith awards called “My Promise, My Faith” We are proud to offer girls an all-inclusive opportunity to deepen their faith within their family’s place of worship by earning the My Promise, My Faith pins. Girls can also continue to earn PRAY awards like “I Live My Faith” administered through their individual faith communities.
Two girls from Girl Scout Junior Troop #4312 in Oconto Falls, WI recently earned their “I Live My Faith” religious recognitions. While earning these recognitions, the girls became more aware of their potential as friends, members of their families, citizens and participants in the community of faith. They learned to more deeply appreciate the place that God and religion occupy in their daily lives. Bishop David Ricken presented the girls with certificates at a mass on September 11 at St Francis Xavier Cathedral in Green Bay.
Daisy Troop #4478 from Abrams, WI built a float for their community parade. The girls worked hard to build a float that paid tribute to the Welcome to the Daisy Flower Garden journey, complete with flowers, a dragonfly, a bumblebee and a watering can! Continue Reading…
